Dominick Ruggerio (Dominick J. Ruggerio), a Democrat, represented Rhode Island’s 4th District from 1985 until his death on April 21, 2025. Ruggerio was Rhode Island Senate president. He was re-elected to the Senate on November 2, 2010, after serving since 1985. November 10, 2010, saw his reelection as Majority Leader. Senate President from 2017 to 2025; Ruggerio died in 2025.

Dominick Rugerio graduated from La Salle Academy in 1966. Ruggerio earned his Bachelor of Science from Providence College in 1974 after attending Bryant College. He was on the Wanskuck Library, Sons of Italy, Loggia Vittoria, and Da Vinci Center Development Committee boards. He retired as New England Laborers Labor Management Coop Trust administrator.

Ruggerio was automatically a member of any regularly meeting Senate committee as president.

From 2003 until 2010, Ruggerio was Majority Whip. Former Senate Labor, Rules, Finance, and Joint Committee on Accounts and Claims member. He chaired the Senate Labor and Transportation Subcommittee. He was Deputy Majority Leader before.

Ruggerio was Rhode Island’s “Dean” with the most years in office.

Before being elected to the Senate, Ruggerio was a member of the Rhode Island House Corporations and Labor Committees from 1981 to 1984.

The lieutenant governor recruited him to advise on policy from 1977 until 1981.

A referendum was proposed by five Rhode Island senators, including Ruggerio, in January 2013 to limit marriage to men and women.

Ruggerio briefly represented Senate District 6 in 2002. His redistribution occurred in 2004.

He lives in North Providence with Amanda and Charles, his children. After cancer therapy, Ruggerio was hospitalized at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence on April 18, 2025. He died three days later, on April 21, aged 76.

Ruggerio was charged in November 1989 for vandalizing Lincoln businessman Nandy M. Sarda’s car in September. In February 1990, he was ordered to pay and avoid Sarda.

Ruggerio was arrested in September 1990 for stealing condoms from a Cranston CVS store. His case was dismissed.

In 2012, Barrington, Rhode Island, arrested Ruggerio for DUI and rejecting a breathalyzer. DUI charges were dropped after a guilty plea to test refusal.
