George McMillan (George Duncan Hastie McMillan Jr.) was Alabama’s 23rd lieutenant governor from 1979 to 1983. Born October 11, 1943, he died April 18, 2025. He started City Stages in downtown Birmingham, Alabama, in 1989.

McMillan Background and education
McMillan was born in Greenville, Alabama. He earned a BA from Auburn University in 1966 and a J.D. from UVA Law in 1969.
McMillan’s Political career
The 1973 Alabama legislative session included McMillan. He then served one term as an Alabama senator from 1974 to 1978. On November 7, 1978, he won the election to become the Lieutenant Governor of Alabama.
Governorship campaign
McMillan placed second in the 1982 Democratic governorship primary behind George Wallace. Wallace beat McMillan in the runoff and Montgomery Republican Mayor Emory Folmar in the general election. After winning the election, he was considered for New South governor.

McMillan organized Birmingham’s City Stages music festival for 20 years.
McMillan, 81, died after surgical complications on April 18, 2025. Governor Kay Ivey called him “a man of great ideas.” Ivey ordered the state flag flown at half-staff during McMillan’s funeral.
