The late American musician and actor Jonathan Joss Gonzales was born December 22, 1965, and died June 1, 2025. He was notable for playing Parks and Recreation Chief Ken Hotate and King of the Hill John Redcorn.

Life before and during work: Joss attended McCollum High School in San Antonio, Texas, where he was born. He quit Texas State University–San Marcos and Southwest Texas State University before graduating. Joss graduated from Our Lady of the Lake University with a speech and theater degree after attending San Antonio College.

After Victor Aaron died in 1996, Joss voiced John Redcorn for two to thirteen seasons of King of the Hill. He played Parks and Recreation’s recurring Chief Ken Hotate.

Joss voiced Red Corn, a Red Corn Band musician, in King of the Hill.

Before his June 2025 death, Joss began recording the King of the Hill revival.

Personal life Joss’s ancestors were Apache and Comanche. The January 23, 2025, fire destroyed Joss’s San Antonio house and three dogs, one of whom was missing. Joss married Tristan Kern de Gonzales on February 14, 2025.

Jonathan Joss’s Death

A neighbor allegedly screamed homophobic comments at Joss on June 1, 2025, then shot and murdered him. Authorities arrested the guy. He attended the 2025 ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas, alongside fellow King of the Hill cast members two days before his death. Hours before, he uploaded an Instagram video showing himself visiting Austin, Texas, and said he had recorded lines for four King of the Hill episodes.

Kern de Gonzales said on Instagram after the murder that people had insulted them and threatened to fire their home for years. The residence burned down after years of neighbor threats, according to Kern de Gonzales. Gonzales and Joss reported threats, but cops did nothing. Kern de Gonzales called Joss’s Facebook attack a homophobic hate crime.
